Profile

County testimonials are designed for cricketers like James Tredwell, who will be Kent’s beneficiary in 2017 after more than a decade and a half of selfless and loyal service to the club. A true man of Kent, he has also represented England with distinction across all formats.

With two Test, 45 ODI and 17 T20I caps to his name, Tredwell can be very proud of his international career, although he is not alone in believing that England’s selectors jettisoned him prematurely following the disastrous 2015 World Cup campaign in Australia and New Zealand.

Ranked in the top 10 of ODI bowlers worldwide at the height of his England career, Tredwell has long been recognised as one of the most effective limited-overs spinners in the domestic game. Indeed, Robert Key was vocal in calling Tredwell the leading English slow bowler in one-day cricket well before his debut in the national team arrived in 2010.

Tredwell has played more than 500 matches for Kent in all cricket since making his debut in 2001, when his maiden first-class wicket was Leicestershire’s Aftab Habib. He has taken more than 400 first-class wickets now, plus almost another 400 in the limited-overs arena, where his calm under pressure is most revealed. In addition, with the bat, he has scored more than 4,500 first-class runs, including four hundreds, and more than 2,300 one-day runs.

Looking back at his whole career, however, for Kent and for England, he has never let county or country down.

Alastair Cook

I think Tredders or as he is more affectionately known 'Tricky', is one of my all time favourite cricketers. What you see is what you get! No frills, no fuss, just gets on with the job in hand and most importantly very tricky when you are facing him.

Few careers carry so much uncertainty as that of a professional cricketer. The demands of playing any sport for a living leaves little time to consider and plan for unforeseen misfortunes in the future.
